Ingredients
Scale
For the Dough:
- 2 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
- ¼ cup granulated sugar
- 1 packet (2 ¼ tsp) instant yeast
- ½ tsp salt
- ½ cup whole milk, warmed
- 3 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
- 1 large ripe banana, mashed
- 1 egg
For the Filling:
- ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
- ½ cup brown sugar
- 1 tbsp ground cinnamon
- ½ tsp nutmeg
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
For the Cream Cheese Glaze:
- 4 oz cream cheese, softened
- ¼ cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- ½ tsp vanilla extract
- 1–2 tbsp milk (to thin, if needed)
Instructions
- Prepare the Dough: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, yeast, and salt. In a separate bowl, mix the warm milk, melted butter, mashed banana, and egg. Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry, stirring until a soft dough forms. Knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 1 hour or until doubled.
- Make the Filling: In a small bowl, mix the softened butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla extract until combined.
- Roll & Fill: Punch down the risen dough and roll it out into a 14×9-inch rectangle on a floured surface. Spread the cinnamon-sugar filling evenly over the dough, leaving a small border. Roll the dough tightly from the long side and cut into 12 even rolls.
- Second Rise & Bake: Arrange the rolls in a greased 9×13-inch baking dish, cover, and let rise for 30 minutes. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown.
- Prepare the Glaze: In a bowl, beat together the cream cheese, butter, powdered sugar, vanilla, and milk until smooth. Drizzle over warm cinnamon rolls and enjoy!
Notes
- For best results, use very ripe bananas for natural sweetness and flavor.
- To make ahead, assemble the rolls, cover, and refrigerate overnight. Bake in the morning!
- Add chopped nuts or chocolate chips to the filling for an extra indulgent twist.
- If you prefer a lighter glaze, substitute the cream cheese with a simple powdered sugar and milk glaze.
